Yellow Mushrooms in Your Potted Plants

February 16, 2007 |23:18 | General Information  By : Arshad Ali Khan

Most people remain in doubt about the yellow mushrooms that pop up in their potted plants and whether these are harmful to plants!

A mushroom is the reproductive structure of a fungus. But the fungus that reproduces yellow mushroom is “Lepiota Lutea”, or the yellow parasol. This species is most commonly found the year-round with potted plants. The small lemon-colored mushrooms are about 1 to 3 inches tall having bell-shaped caps. Although not harmful to plants, the yellow mushrooms are poisonous to people and animals, so if pets or small children are nearby it would be advisable  to remove them as they appear. Also note that Fungicide treatments are generally not effective against yellow mushrooms

Thanks for the advisory. I just found one in the soil of my potted ficus and couldn''t find it in my mushroom field guide. Luckily, I got to it before my kids or my dog did.
