Sitemap Taxonomy

May 27, 2010 |11:28 | Taxonomy  By : Team X

Sitemap taxonomy is a way to classify the tremendous amount of information available on the World Wide Web. Organizing web content is a lot of work that requires manpower and money. But creating sitemap taxonomy is a process that must be done in order to make information readily available to users.

Often times the information is there but users are unable to access it. With the sitemap taxonomy, web content is arranged in such a way that the user will be able to use it effectively. As it is more and more users are flooded with information that is useless to them thus creating frustration.

Wildlife garden bylaw to lie fallow until 2011

February 13, 2010 |16:38 | General Information | Horticulture & Crops | Landscape Plants | Plants | Taxonomy | Trees/ Shrubs/ Weeds | Vegetables  By : Team X

Wildlife gardeners will have to wait another year before the city changes its bylaw to allow tall grasses and wildflowers to flourish in people's yards.

"Based on our resources and current workloads, we won't get to it this year," said Christine Hartig, a policy officer in the city's bylaw and regulatory services branch.

But Capital Councillor Clive Doucet said the decision to delay the bylaw changes was made without councillors' input, and he wants the gardening matter dealt with this year, as planned.

"We were told by senior staff it would be ready to go this spring," Doucet said. "Why wouldn't you want to straighten it out this year? It's not rocket science. ... It's so simple."

INTRODUCTION TO PLANT TAXONOMY

February 27, 2009 |14:06 | Plants | Taxonomy  By : Team X

INTRODUCTION TO PLANT TAXONOMYTaxonomy is the method by which scientists, conservationists, and naturalists classify and organize the vast diversity of living things on this planet in an effort to understand the evolutionary relationships between them.

Modern taxonomy originated in the mid-1700s when Swedish-born Carolus Linnaeus (also known as Carl Linnaeus or Carl von Linné) published his multi-volume Systema naturae, outlining.

His new and revolutionary method for classifying and, especially, naming living organisms. Prior to Linnaeus, all described species were given long, complex names that provided much more information than was needed and were clumsy to use. Linnaeus took a different approach.

Eating al fresco - creating the perfect spot

March 17, 2008 |16:30 | Gardening | General Information | Plants | Taxonomy  By : Team X

Eating and entertaining are among the most delightful functions of a garden.

Perhaps it's our climate, but dining alfresco seems to have reached new heights of popularity in recent years.

And the more enticing your outdoor area is, the more you'll use it - for eating breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Follow these ideas for creating the perfect space:

1. If you love the look of a European restaurant-style courtyard, create your own at home (see above). The ingredients are simple: gravel flooring, a pair of bistro chairs, a round metal table and a couple of terracotta pots.

What to plant: Simple clipped greenery is the look to go for here, so plant up a pair of trimmed buxus in terracotta pots and set up the scene against a tall, private hedge.

2. Traditional-style cane seating instantly evokes the classic look of a plantation verandah. But you can mix it up with a more contemporary table. Just ensure that cane stays under cover so it doesn't deteriorate.

What to plant: Use a pair of potted conifers to frame a dining nook; Wollemi pines would be ideal. Then add hardy foliage plants, and box, with a few potted herbs as table pieces.

Propagation by cuttings

December 1, 2007 |13:16 | Flowers | Fruits | Gardening | General Information | Landscape Plants | Plants | Taxonomy  By : Team X

The ideal time to take cuttings is when the plant has begun it's active growth cycle in early spring. The 'stock' plant should be healthy and well branched to ensure the health of the new clones. Using a sharp clean knife, take a cutting 3 or 4 inches in length from the top growing tips or vigorous side shoots. The cut should be made at a slight angle, just below a node (The point on the stem where a leaf has developed). Trim off any flower buds and the lower leaves from the cutting, leaving a stem with 3-4 leaves at the tip. Dip the cut end into a rooting hormone such as Roottone® or Hormonex®, and insert the cutting deep enough into sterile moist sand, vermiculite or sphagnum moss that it will support itself. At least one node must be buried, but it is better if there are 2-3 nodes covered. (The nodes are where the new roots will emerge from.) Water the rooting medium well. Create a mini-greenhouse over the container with poly film over a wire frame (an old aquarium works very well for this) and place it in a bright, warm spot (NOT full sun). Keep the cuttings at a minimum temperature of 72 degrees, and you will be rewarded with several new plants in just a few weeks.
Keep in mind that when you are doing any type of plant propagation that you are doing "plant surgery", and that cleanliness is extremely important. Always use a clean, sharp knife and sterile potting medium for the best results!

Taxonomy or Search? Dow Jones Discusses the Synergy

September 9, 2007 |16:36 | Taxonomy  By : Team X

While it’s common for businesses to have a broad understanding of online and enterprise search, what is often overlooked is the importance of taxonomy and what it can do for you. Taxonomy is the process of classification, in business terms this relates to the mapping and retrieval of unstructured data. “Every business is a library of kinds and taxonomy gives you the ability to get right to the information you need” Clarke told IDM.Sounds like search right? In a sense it is, but taxonomy is much more then that, it’s the ability to map the myriad of documents and digital assets within the business in a way that’s more intuitive then an algorithm searching for a keyword. According to Clarke, creating taxonomy for your business lets you give machines understanding.Taxonomies are also closely linked to the semantic web, the emerging extension to the World Wide Web which allows certain software agents to communicate with each other to improve information sharing. The semantic web is an evolving concept which hopes to see the classification and exchange of information surpass the limitations of the current incarnation of the internet.“The most exciting discoveries will come from the serendipitous combination and integration of data drawn from diverse sources” said Tim Berners-Lee, Director of the World Wide Web consortium. The semantic web is one of the two big evolutions of the internet which is occurring right now. The other direction of web evolution is the much hyped ‘Web 2.0’ evolution which is seeing unparalleled levels of collaboration and social networking occurring. Clake admits to being “an evangelist for taxonomy and the semantic web” though the potential for the semantic web to become a quiet achieving underdog are definitely present. While Web 2.0 aims to give a more interactive and networked experience to users, the semantic web aims to “revolutionise the way people access all levels of information” Clake explained.

Different Types of Flowers and How to Plant Them

August 20, 2007 |18:21 | Taxonomy  By : Team X

Flowers are wonderful and refreshing gifts for friends or family, but growing your own types of flowers in your yard or garden is much more rewarding and relaxing.Daffodils are types of flowers called perennials. The best time for them to be planted is in the fall before the freezes start. But you want to keep it late enough into the fall the bulbs can start their growth. Plant Daffodils in the sun’s full light. You need to dig your hole for planting 3 times as deep that the bulb is in width. Put soil over them and tap lightly to let the air pockets out. Do not use fertilizer in the planting, in the Spring all you need to do is sprinkle some kind of bone meal over the plants.Azaleas are types of flowers in the evergreen shrubs family. Azaleas are a must have in almost everyone’s garden and yards. To plant dig a hole 2 times as large as the azalea root ball is, keeping the depth the same. The plant should be place so that the ball of the root is level to the soils surface. Now, just fill around plant with soil from the hole you dug, removing any debris and rocks as you are replacing it. Put between 3-4 inches of mulching around the azalea plants and you are on your way to enjoying some very pretty flowers.Roses are types of flowers everyone loves and adores. They have an elegance and beauty about them. Seeds should be propagated for planting. The seeds of the rose can take up to 2 years to go through the germination process if not cared for properly. To quicken this along, seeds should be placed into peat that is dampened in about a temperature of 27-31 degree C. Keep them there about 4 months and seeds will begin their germination process. Seedlings need to be placed into pots individually, once big enough to hold them. In the summer time start planting seedlings outdoors and soon you will be sitting back, relaxing and enjoying your own roses.Tulips are other favorite types of flowers most everyone adores. Tulips bloom very hardy in the springtime. Plant the tulips in masses of about 9-10 each of the one kind variety.
